Iran unveils new missile with 2000-km range capable of reaching Israel
Iran’s Defense Minister, Gen Mohammad Reza Ashtiani claims that Iran has test-launched a new missile called Kheibar, with 2000-km range, and further claiming that the missile is capable of reaching areas in Israel. This is the longest-range missile Iran has manufactured till date. The unveiling took place today 25th May.
A few seconds video footage of the test-launch was shown on State Tv, with no dates. Iran’s Defense Minister said that the missile which could be prepared for launch in a short period has the ability to evade radar detection and penetrate the enemy’s air defense systems. The missile could be fitted with a 1,500 kilogram warhead.
Concerns have been growing over Iran’s uranium enrichment which Israel believes is intended for nuclear weapons development. Days before Iran’s announcement of the missile test, Israel’s IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and several top Israeli officials had warned of a possible war with Iran over its nuclear program.
Iran sees Israel as an enemy and has been accused of funding of anti-Israeli terrorists in surrounding nations. Israel also sees Iran as a threat to its existence and has repeatedly warned that Israel could act (even alone) to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
