Amid tension and cautious moves by neighboring countries, North Korea’s spy satellite launch which occurred at about 6:30 am on Wednesday has failed. North Korea’s state media publication suggests that the rocket which bore the satellite crashed into the sea.
The satellite launch came barely 72 hours after an announcement of the intention to launch a satellite between 31 May and 11 June. The crashed satellite despite being an embarrassment to North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un, shows North Korea’s resolve to bolster its military capabilities despite difficult terrains. These unrelenting moves has been been a source for concern for Japan, South Korea and even the United States.
Just like in Feb 2016 failed satellite launch, neighbors have again accused North Korea of reckless ambition for aggression. However, North Korea believes that further development of its military capabilities including putting a spy satellite in space will fortify its defenses against what it refers to as reckless aggressive military drills by South Korea and USA.
The current satellite launch has been criticized by various countries as aggressive acts that violates many UN resolutions against North Korea’s nuclear and missiles programs.
In Japan and South Korea in particular there was confusion and chaos as missile warning systems and alarms were activated. Many in the suspected missile route(s) were either warned to stay indoors or prepare for evacuation.
