The White House have confirmed that Ukraine’s military is now using the US-made cluster bombs against Russia in Ukrainian territories. Cluster bombs are weapon that contain several explosive submunitions and are capable of inflicting heavy damages to infrastructures and humans (including civilians).
Because of the several bomblets it releases over a very wide area, they constitute a great risk to civilians during and after attacks. Cluster munitions are banned by over 111 Nations.
The US decision to supply the weapon to Ukraine was to boost their military hardwares for effective defense of Ukrainian territories. Meanwhile, the supply was made with Ukraine’s promise to use the bomb only to dislodge Russian soldiers concentrations in Ukrainian territories.
The decision to supply the weapons were opposed by even US ally nations including Canada, New Zealand and Spain. Under the Convention on Cluster Munitions, the bombs are forbidden. According to Reuters, Russia, Ukraine and United States are not among the over 111 nations that ratified the Convention’s prohibition on cluster bombs. Under the convention, there is a ban on production, accumulation and sharing of the weapons.
The US National Security Spokesperson, Mr. John Kirby said Ukraine is effectively and appropriately using the weapons against Russian defensive formations.
